Dear White Male Gamers

This is an open letter to White Male Gamers.  Don't worry boys, I'm one of you.  But as I look around myself in this little community that we've built for ourselves and that we're gradually opening up, it seems that one or two of us are a little putout.  This is for you.

SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Seriously, every time I read something like this or like this, I find myself wanting to scream.

You are acting like the kid who gets annoyed when his favorite band becomes more popular.  You know, that one that we all collectively agreed a while back was a completely worthless cunt?

Ok, let's respond to these two morons first in specifics.

Firstly Mister Straight Male Gamer.  You sir, are an idiot.  First of all, you say that bioware aren't catoring to their main demographic?  Well, I'm confused, because every single description I've ever seen of the relationships in Dragon Age mention that there are straight relationships in the game, so not to worry, you can safely bang that elf if you want to.

There are gay relationships in the game too.  That seems to be what's annoyed our straight male gamer so much.  Apparently the thought of simply not pursuing the gay relationship just didn't occur to this fan.  He is so disgusted by the idea that bioware have spilled some of the gays over his completely heterosexual leather clad oiled muscles sword fucking wish fulfilment.

Bioware, wonderfully, responded by telling him to get over it and telling him off for his display of priviledge.

Second, and much much worse is the story of Bioware writer Jennifer Hepler quitting over death threats.  This is what's so pathetic and frustrating about this faction of gaming.  More than anything they are holding us back.

Let's tackle the real issue here.  Some of us are scared of letting girls into the clubhouse.  Or non whites.  Or gays.

It makes a kind of sense, even to me.  Gaming's always been a bit of an escape and once the internet came into existence it really became about community.  It was an underground community, often criticised and misjudged.

It gave us an us against the world attitude.  Which made sense, when the rest of the world was calling us geeks (and it was still an insult) and mocking us for playing with toys.

But they're not toys.  We always seen the potential.  We knew what games could be.

Now, that message is starting to get through.  Games are starting to be taken seriously as an artistic medium.  Being a geek is no longer an insult.  Gamers come in all shades.

And that's the problem, isn't it.  It's not our clubhouse anymore.  It's not us vs the world.

Some of you might find this difficult to adapt to.  To which I say, fuck off!  If you don't like it, find some other obscure thing and try and make that all about you instead.

I play games because games are great.  They are a new medium, a means of expanding the range of stories that we can tell.  I fully believe that games have already been crafted which constitute major works of art.

I believe that as games become more accepted in the mainstream this will only continue.

We are about to open the gate towards something truly revolutionary and a bunch of dipshits are trying to hold us back in order to defend the Boys Only Club.

So to them I say, fuck off.  We're on the path to greatness.  Get on board or get left behind.

Yours,
A gamer who's had enough of your shit

Any attempts for a series
