Halflife 2

This week I've been playing a bit of Halflife 2 again.  It's really aged quite fantastically well.  Let's figure out why.

Nine Inch Nails - My Violent Heart

Nine Inch Nails have just released their first major label album since Year Zero and it's been getting high reviews.  For me, the intervening period has been... well... let's just say not great.

Call of Cthulhu: dark corners of the earth

CoTC:DCOTE is the winner of the world stupidest acronym for a game.  It's also an unappreciated classic of recent games.

Monday, 23 September 2013

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust

The definitive song from the definitive glam rock album.  Really, this review could stop right there.  But it won't.  I wouldn't shortchange y'all like that.

Attack The Block

Neds vs Space Aliens.  Should suck.  Doesn't.

Akira - Volume 1

Recently I took a look at the anime classic that broke down the doors to the western market and paved the way for thousands of others.  Today, we start our six part look at the epic length Manga that inspired it.

District 9

Not all scifi needs to have a message and certainly some people out there would prefer it didn't.  But I'm not one of them.  District 9 is very much sci fi with a message.  It's also one of my favorite films in recent memory.

Madness - Baggy Trousers

The first song I ever danced to in a nightclub, when I was 17 years old, was this and to this day I've never seen a dancefloor respond so quickly and fun.  With the clatter of schoolbells that opens the tune, circles of conversation were tossed aside as the dancefloor was rushed with people.

Doctor Who - Series 6

Continuing our look back at Doctor Who, it's time to cast an eye over the second half of Moffat's best season.

Monday, 16 September 2013

Refused - New Noise

When Refused released this album, they called it The Shape Of Punk To Come.  Oh, I wish.

We're Alive

You know, I've been of the opinion recently that zombies are becoming kind of old hat and could do with going away for a while.  But then, here comes something new to reinvigorate the genre again.

AKIRA

Over the next little while, I'm going to be taking a look at Katsuhiro Otomo's masterpiece manga AKIRA.  Today, we'll start with it's best known incarnation though, one of two films that broke open the anime market in the west.

Android Roundup 1

Everyone wants in on the handheld market.  It makes sense why, it doesn't take a lot of observation to spot the humongous stacks of money Nintendo have made from the market.  Which is why it's so surprising that it was phones that ended up stealing the crown.

Fargo

A film about idiots being awful to each other shouldn't be this appealing.  But it is.

Tuesday, 10 September 2013

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Tupelo

It starts with a crack of thunder and an ominous bass pulse.  The voice of a mad preacher cuts through the air with protestations of doom.  A guitar shimmers and twists in and out of hearing.  That black rain comes down.

Breaking Bad - Confessions

With the lovely N returned from her holiday, we returned last night to Breaking Bad.  The episode did not disappoint.

Dead Space

There are many things I want to like about Dead Space.  Indeed, I would probably class it as a good game.  But more than anything, I wish it could have been better.

Welcome To Night Vale

Welcome to Night Vale is the broadcasts of a small community radio station in a town where hauntings are quite possibly the least of their problems.  It is also by far and away one of the most enjoyable listens I've had in recent memory.

Talking Heads - Burning Down The House

I've been on a little bit of a kick for Talking Heads in the last few weeks.  I've always been a fan but for the last wee while, they've occupied a fairly regular place on my spotify favorites.  Let's see if I can explain why.

Thursday, 5 September 2013

Anais Mitchell - Way Down Hadestown

A concept album about a greek myth in a post apocalyptic future setting heavily inspired by great depression era America while worryingly relevant to our situation today?  Sign me up!

The Happening

M. Night Shyamalan, who I still remember was being called a box office hero for his early run of movies, has become such a toxic name that movie studios now intentionally hide his involvement in movies he directed.  While that does raise questions about how he continues to get work when there are so many young directors trying to get into the business, lets take a look at the film that was the effective ringing bell for the end of his career.

Beardyman - Twist Ya Ankel

Beatboxer Beardyman released his debut album 2 years ago and at first, I hated it.  But on a repeated listens, it went from one of my most disappointing releases to one of my favorites.

Excision - 8 Bit Superhero

When did dubstep become a dirty word?  Ok, perhaps a better question would be when was it not, but regardless, today we take a look at a wonderfully filthy little track from Excision.

Doctor Who Season 6 - Part 1

I'm going to continue my gradual recap of Doctor Who, today we take a look at the first half of season 6.

Saturday, 31 August 2013

DOTA 2

I watched a friend of mine play hours of Dota before I ever decided to try it.  There were a couple of reasons for my not picking it up then, primarily my lack of a gaming computer that could handle it.  But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't put off by the infamously toxic community and by the immense difficulty wall that fuelled it.  Since then, it's become one of my favorite games.  Why?

Shadowrun Returns

You know, I legitimately thought this genre had gone the way of the dodo.  Apparently not! The turn based squad based strategy lives and it's in ruder health than ever.

Joker Rising

It's an odd place, this here internet, and one of my favorite outpourings of that oddness is the phenomenon of the fan film.

Doctor Who - The Tv Movie

[Due to starting a new job, I'm going to start posting these updates at nine instead of six]

Here's a bit of fanboy blasphemy.  I don't hate the doctor who movie.  I know I made that joke about it earlier, but in all honesty, it really could have been much worse.

Dead Rising 2

Dear Dead Rising 2.  I've tried.  I really have.

Monday, 26 August 2013

The Warriors

Somewhere in the future, 1979.  That's the only way I can describe the setting of this movie.  It almost plays out like an american Clockwork Orange.  Lets take a look at one of the greatest films to ever come out of the 70's.

Sunday, 25 August 2013

The Mountain Goats - No Children

If this song doesn't break your heart, I suspect you might not have one.

Saturday, 24 August 2013

Breaking Bad - Buried

Walt's time as Heisenberg is coming to an end.  Now, as the lies he's built around himself begin to crumble, we begin to see his third transformation.

Friday, 23 August 2013

Spec Ops - The Line

This game is not fun.  Graphically, it's rather dated.  In terms of gameplay, it's rather formulaic.  So why am I joining thousands of other critics in hailing it as the best game of 2012?

Thursday, 22 August 2013

Bastion

"Now this right here is a curious tale.  An Isometric action rpg right out of the days of yore, upgraded for our modern times.  Lets see what the kid thought"

Wednesday, 21 August 2013

Kavinsky - Nightcall

This time, I take a look at Kavinsky's Nightcall, otherwise known as that song from Drive.

Tuesday, 20 August 2013

Breaking Bad - Blood Money

Ok, so I know I'm a little behind the curve on this one, but cut me a little slack, I'm watching the show with my girlfriend and we only just caught up.  That said, here's my take on the season premiere of Breaking Bad's final run of episodes.

Monday, 19 August 2013

Deftones - Passenger

I consider myself to be a touch of a nu-metal apologist.  Hell, I'll even muster up a defence for a few limp bizkit songs (although their newest is astoundingly awful)  But if there's one band I don't ever feel I have to apologise for, it's the deftones.

Sunday, 18 August 2013

Dear White Male Gamers

This is an open letter to White Male Gamers.  Don't worry boys, I'm one of you.  But as I look around myself in this little community that we've built for ourselves and that we're gradually opening up, it seems that one or two of us are a little putout.  This is for you.

Gaunt's Ghosts - The Founding

Sci fi is an amazing genre, full of depth and possibility.  It offers opportunities for scope and scale.  So why is it that the second best series of sci fi novels out there are a franchise based off Warhammer 40,000's least popular army?  Let's take a look.

Friday, 16 August 2013

Dredd

What if I told you that in 2012, somebody decided to take another crack at a franchise Sylvester Stallone had poisoned utterly and while nobody was looking, quietly produced one of the best sci-fi action flick in years?

Thursday, 15 August 2013

Doctor Who - Series 7 Part 2

By the way, dear everyone who's bitching about Peter Capaldi being to old to play the doctor and everyone who's bitching about the people who're bitching about Peter Capaldi being to old and the people that Peter Capaldi is neither black nor a woman, I have a message for you. Now where were we?

Can - Halleluwah

So imagine a german modern classical musician went to New York and met Andy Warhol and more importantly, seen the velvet underground.  So he goes back home and recruits a bunch of friends who don't particularly listen to rock music and they form a rock band.  Their first singer has a nervous breakdown after the release of their first album.  So they recruit a busker off the street despite (or possibly because of) the fact that he knows only three chords and is making up the songs off the top of his head.  With their perfect lineup coalesced they retreat to a castle and record their masterpiece.

Dwarf Fortress

This game is ugly.  Even with one of the skinpacks, it's ugly.  It's hard.  There are no instructions unless you go out hunting for them online.  So why have I been playing it at least once a week for three years?

Monday, 12 August 2013

Pacific Rim (or: This movie makes no sense and I don't care)

Go see Pacific Rim. Seriously. As your Lawyer, I advise you to go to the cinema, buy yourself a ticket and see Pacific Rim. Nothing else at the cinema will offer you as much fun as this film will in the two hours you spend watching it. Just... Just leave your brains at the door, k?

Yila ft Scroobius Pip - Astronaut

Scroobius Pip first showed up on my radar as he did for most people, at the side of his partner in crime Dan Le Sac on their (still to this day awesome) debut single Thou Shalt Always Kill.  Over time, Pip proved that that was not hyperbole, that he would bring gold on anything he worked on.  So in light of their soon to be released next album, I've been going on a bit of a trawl through their previous tunes.

Grand Theft Auto 4 Recap

Yesterday I posted my thoughts on GTA 4 but as promised today, I revisit the topic.

Friday, 9 August 2013

Grand Theft Auto 4

3 years ago, I posted this review of GTA4.  In light of 5's upcoming release, I wanted to reexamine my thoughts on the games last entry.  So here's my review of GTA4, circa 3 years ago.  Tomorrow, I'm going to reexamine it, seeing what has changed between then and now and what I want from GTA5.

Doctor Who - Series 7 Part 1

BBC America is apparently not happy with the choice of Peter Capaldi as the new doctor. In fact, they're so unhappy that rumour has it they're considering creating an american version of the show.

I mean, of course, it went so well last time they tried.

So beginning my look back at the resurrected Doctor Who I'm going to take a look at the first half of recently concluded season 7 after the jump.

Kanye West - New Slaves

It seems like, once again, Kanye West is intent on causing controversy.  In his latest of his wide accumulation of headlines, he's caught flak for pronouncing his second verse on "New Slaves" to be the greatest rap verse of all time.

Is he right?
